A piece of evidence may be highly relevant, applicable,
comprehensive, and adequate while the reliability of the source
behind that evidence remains uncertain.
VALIDOS™ therefore separates:

Validation Source Reliability Standard governs the second question.
It establishes the conditions necessary to determine:
- where Validation Evidence originated,
- which source produced or supplied it,
- whether the source can be sufficiently identified,
- whether attribution can be established,
- whether provenance is sufficiently reconstructable,
- whether the source possesses the required competence or capability,
- whether relevant independence exists,
- whether conflicts of interest are visible,
- whether the evidence passed through intermediaries,
- whether material transformations occurred,
- whether source integrity conditions are known,
- whether corroboration is required,
- whether source reliability has materially changed,
- and whether the source can legitimately support the evidentiary role assigned to it.
VSRS does not determine whether evidence is relevant or adequate.
It does not determine whether the Validation Object is valid.
It determines whether the source relationship behind Validation
Evidence is sufficiently reliable for governed validation use.
Purpose
The purpose of Validation Source Reliability Standard is to preventvalidation confidence from being derived from evidence whose source
basis is unknown, insufficiently attributable, materially
conflicted, methodologically incapable, excessively dependent,
provenance-deficient, or otherwise unreliable.
The standard prevents validation from silently treating:
- anonymous origin as established origin,
- publication as reliability,
- institutional authority as universal competence,
- repetition as independence,
- multiple intermediaries as multiple independent sources,
- source popularity as methodological credibility,
- source confidence as evidence quality,
- and source reputation as permanent reliability.
VSRS creates a governed source-reliability layer between qualified
evidence and subsequent validation execution.
Governance Objective
VSRS establishes a governed Validation Source Reliability Frameworkcapable of determining whether sources behind Validation Evidence
possess sufficient reliability for their assigned validation roles.
The standard seeks to ensure that:
- source identity is sufficiently established,
- source attribution is traceable,
- provenance is reconstructable,
- source roles are explicit,
- material intermediaries are visible,
- material transformations are traceable,
- competence is proportionate to the source role,
- independence is assessed where required,
- conflicts of interest remain visible,
- source dependencies are identifiable,
- corroboration requirements can be established,
- source reliability conditions remain bounded,
- reliability change can be detected,
- and source reliability can be formally determined.
Operational Role
Validation Source Reliability Standard serves as thesource-qualification stage of the VALIDOS™ validation lifecycle.
The preceding architecture establishes:

VSRS then asks:
Can the sources underlying that qualified evidence basis be
sufficiently relied upon?
Its structural progression is:

Evidence Basis
The resulting source-qualified evidence basis can then progress into

Validation Source
For the purposes of VALIDOS™, a Validation Source is anyidentifiable entity, system, process, instrument, repository,
person, organization, model, sensor, database, document origin,
operational environment, or other origin capable of materially
contributing Validation Evidence.
A source may:
- generate evidence,
- observe evidence,
- record evidence,
- measure evidence,
- transform evidence,
- transmit evidence,
- interpret evidence,
- aggregate evidence,
- preserve evidence,
- or provide evidence.
Different source roles may require different reliability conditions.
Source Identity
Source reliability cannot be meaningfully governed where therelevant source cannot be sufficiently distinguished.
Source identity may require identification of:
- source entity,
- source instance,
- system,
- instrument,
- organization,
- individual,
- repository,
- model,
- dataset origin,
- version,
- or another relevant source representation.
The required identity precision should correspond to the validation
role and consequence.
Source Attribution
VSRS governs whether Validation Evidence can be sufficientlyattributed to the source claimed to have generated, observed,
recorded, transmitted, or supplied it.
Attribution may be:
Direct
Derived
Intermediated Aggregated
Uncertain
or:
Unattributed
Attribution status must remain visible where it materially affects
source reliability.
Source Provenance
Provenance establishes the history through which evidence reachedthe validation process.
The governed progression may include:
Origin → Generation → Recording → Transformation → Transmission →
Aggregation → Storage → Retrieval → Validation Use
Not every validation requires complete reconstruction of every
technical event.
The required provenance depth must be proportionate to the
evidentiary role, Validation Depth, and consequence of reliance.
Source Lineage
Evidence may derive from multiple upstream sources.A final report, dataset, benchmark, or analytical output may
represent a downstream source while depending upon:
- primary observations,
- external datasets,
- prior studies,
- other models,
- third-party measurements,
- or aggregated records.
VSRS requires material upstream dependencies to remain visible where
they affect reliability.
Primary and Derived Sources
VALIDOS™ distinguishes between:Primary Source
and:
Derived Source
A Primary Source originates the relevant observation, measurement,
record, or event representation.
A Derived Source obtains its evidentiary content through another
source or transformation.
Derived evidence is not automatically less reliable.
However, derivation creates additional lineage and transformation
conditions that may require governance.
Source Capability
A source must be capable of performing the evidentiary role assignedto it.
Capability may concern:
- measurement capability,
- observation capability,
- technical capability,
- analytical capability,
- domain capability,
- operational access,
- data access,
- or another relevant function.
A source may be highly reputable while lacking capability for a
particular evidentiary role.
Source Competence
Where human, institutional, professional, or analytical judgmentcontributes materially to Validation Evidence, competence may
require assessment.
Relevant considerations may include:
- expertise,
- qualification,
- experience,
- methodological understanding,
- domain knowledge,
- or demonstrated capability.
VSRS does not establish universal professional
qualification requirements.
It governs whether competence is sufficient for the role assigned
within validation.
Source Authority and Source Reliability
Authority may be relevant but is not equivalent to reliability.VALIDOS™ establishes:
Source Authority ≠ Source Reliability
An authoritative institution may be highly reliable within its
governed domain while remaining unsuitable for conclusions outside
its competence or evidentiary role.
Likewise, a non-authoritative source may provide highly reliable
primary evidence.
VSRS therefore evaluates reliability according to function rather
than title alone.
Source Independence
Some validation roles require independent evidence.Independence may concern separation from:
- the Validation Object creator,
- system operator,
- financial beneficiary,
- decision authority,
- evidence generator,
- prior evaluator,
- or another materially interested party.
Independence requirements should be proportionate to Validation
Purpose, Depth, and consequence.
Independence Is Not Binary
A source may possess different forms and degrees of independence.Possible dimensions include:
- organizational independence,
- financial independence,
- methodological independence,
- operational independence,
- informational independence,
- analytical independence,
- and decision independence.
A source should not be classified as simply "independent" without
regard to the independence dimension relevant to the
validation role.
Source Dependence
Multiple sources may appear independent while relying upon the sameupstream origin.
For example:
ten publications may all repeat information from one
original dataset.
Counting them as ten independent sources would create
false corroboration.
VSRS therefore governs source dependence and shared lineage.
Conflict of Interest
A conflict of interest does not automatically make asource unreliable.
It creates a governance condition.
Material conflicts may include:
- financial interest,
- organizational interest,
- reputational interest,
- operational ownership,
- contractual dependence,
- competitive interest,
- personal interest,
- or another incentive capable of affecting evidentiary behavior.
Conflicts should be identified, assessed, and incorporated into the
Source Reliability Determination.
Source Incentives
Source reliability may be affected by incentives even where noformal conflict exists.
Incentives may encourage:
- selective reporting,
- favorable interpretation,
- omission,
- exaggeration,
- under-reporting,
- or evidentiary framing.
VSRS therefore permits incentive analysis where material to
validation reliability.
Evidence Transformation
Transformation can change evidentiary meaning.Examples include:
- aggregation,
- normalization,
- translation,
- compression,
- filtering,
- statistical processing,
- model interpretation,
- summarization,
- anonymization,
- or format conversion.
VSRS governs whether material transformations are sufficiently
identifiable and traceable.
It does not determine whether the resulting evidence is adequate;
that remains within VEFS.
Source Integrity Conditions
VSRS may consume relevant integrity information concerning whether asource, record, system, instrument, or evidentiary pathway has
remained protected against material alteration, corruption,
substitution, or loss.
Where integrity governance is required, INTEGROS® may provide
complementary integrity conditions.
VSRS uses such information only insofar as it affects source
reliability within validation.
Source Corroboration
Some source roles may require corroboration.Corroboration asks whether materially independent sources support
compatible evidentiary conclusions.
VSRS distinguishes genuine corroboration from repetition.
Repeated information from one upstream source does not constitute
independent corroboration.
Source Convergence
Where multiple sufficiently independent sources converge uponcompatible evidence, source reliability confidence may increase.
However, convergence must not automatically override:
- shared bias,
- shared methodology,
- shared datasets,
- shared incentives,
- or common upstream dependencies.
VSRS therefore requires convergence to remain lineage-aware.
Source Reliability Limitations
A source may be reliable within defined boundaries.For example:
- reliable for raw measurement but not interpretation,
- reliable for one jurisdiction but not another,
- reliable for one operating environment,
- reliable for one data type,
- or reliable only within a defined period.
Source Reliability Determinations must preserve these boundaries.
Source Reliability Uncertainty
Where source identity, provenance, capability, independence, oranother material condition cannot be sufficiently established, VSRS
preserves uncertainty.
Possible outcomes should not be forced into a binary
trusted/untrusted classification.
Uncertainty itself is a governed source condition.
Source Reliability Status
VSRS may establish conditions such as:Source Reliable
The source is sufficiently reliable for the defined validation role.
Source Conditionally Reliable
The source may support validation only within explicit conditions,
limitations, or restrictions.
Source Reliability Undetermined
Available information is insufficient to establish a defensible
reliability determination.
Source Reliability Insufficient
Material source-reliability requirements remain unresolved.
Source Unreliable
The source cannot legitimately perform the proposed validation role.
These states apply to the source-role relationship.
They do not represent Evidence Fitness or the Validation State of
the Validation Object.
Source Reliability Is Role-Specific
VALIDOS™ establishes:A source is not universally reliable or unreliable.
The same source may be:
Reliable for direct measurement,
Conditionally Reliable for interpretation,
and:
Unreliable for conclusions outside its capability.
Reliability must therefore remain connected to the exact evidentiary
role assigned to the source.
Source Reliability and Evidence Fitness
VALIDOS™ maintains the architectural separation:Evidence Fitness asks:
Is the evidence fit for the validation question?
Source Reliability asks:
Can the source behind that evidence be sufficiently relied upon for
its assigned role?
Neither condition substitutes for the other.
Possible combinations include:

Only by governing both dimensions can VALIDOS™ distinguish
evidentiary quality from source trustworthiness.
Source Reliability and Truth
A reliable source does not automatically make every statement true.VALIDOS™ establishes:
Reliable Source ≠ True Claim
Source reliability concerns the credibility of the source
relationship within validation.
Truth-oriented assessment remains a separate
methodological question.
Source Reliability and Execution
VSRS does not determine whether the approved validation methodologywas correctly executed.
A reliable source can still be used incorrectly.
An unreliable source can also be correctly processed while producing
a weak validation basis.
Execution governance therefore remains a subsequent independent
VALIDOS™ responsibility.
Source Reliability Change
Source reliability may change because of:- source modification,
- ownership change,
- capability change,
- newly discovered conflicts,
- provenance discovery,
- compromised systems,
- altered incentives,
- new upstream dependencies,
- changed methodology,
- or new reliability evidence.
Material change may require reassessment.
Source Reliability Expiration
A Source Reliability Determination may be time-bounded.Expiration may be appropriate where reliability depends upon:
- certification periods,
- calibration,
- organizational conditions,
- system versions,
- personnel qualifications,
- current independence,
- or another time-sensitive condition.
Expiration does not mean the source becomes
unreliable automatically.
It means the previous determination can no longer be assumed current
without reassessment.
Source Reliability Traceability
Source Reliability should remain traceable to:- Validation Evidence,
- source identity,
- source role,
- provenance,
- lineage,
- capability,
- competence where applicable,
- independence,
- dependencies,
- conflicts,
- transformations,
- corroboration,
- limitations,
- uncertainty,
- reliability status,
- and subsequent validation use.
This creates reconstructable source governance across the
VALIDOS™ lifecycle.
Governance Boundary
Validation Source Reliability Standard begins when qualifiedValidation Evidence possesses identifiable or potentially
identifiable sources requiring reliability assessment.
It ends when the material source relationships behind the evidence
basis have been sufficiently identified, traced, assessed, bounded,
and assigned a Source Reliability status for their intended
validation roles.
VSRS does not determine:
- Validation Object identity,
- Validation Purpose or Scope,
- Validation Criteria,
- Validation Method suitability,
- Evidence Relevance,
- Evidence Applicability,
- Evidence Coverage,
- Evidence Adequacy,
- Validation Execution conformity,

Minimum Governance Requirements
A conforming implementation of VSRS should establish:- 1. identifiable validation-source relationships,
