Understanding Classification Assignment Standard (CAS)
What Is Classification Assignment Standard?
Classification Assignment Standard is the fourth Parent Standard ofCLA® — Classification Architecture. It governs how classification
decisions are assigned, documented, validated, and continuously
governed to ensure that every assigned classification remains
accurate, consistent, transparent, explainable, and independently
verifiable.
Classification Assignment Standard recognizes that defining scope,
establishing criteria, and evaluating context do not themselves
produce an official classification. A governed assignment process is
required to transform evaluated information into a trusted and
operational classification decision.
Why Classification Assignment Standard Exists
A classification becomes operational only after an officialassignment has been performed.
Without governed assignment, classification decisions may become
inconsistent, subjective, undocumented, difficult to reproduce, or
impossible to independently verify. A standardized assignment
methodology is therefore required to ensure that every
classification decision follows a controlled and transparent
governance process.
Classification Assignment Standard exists to ensure that every
classification assignment is evidence-based, methodologically
consistent, and fully auditable.
Use Case 1 — Autonomous AI Governance
ScenarioAn autonomous AI platform evaluates operational events before
assigning official incident classifications.
Application
Classification Assignment Standard governs the assignment
methodology by ensuring that approved scope, established criteria,
and validated context are applied consistently before the
classification decision is finalized.
Result
Classification assignments remain accurate, transparent,
reproducible, and independently verifiable across autonomous
operations.
Use Case 2 — Financial Information Classification
ScenarioA financial institution assigns regulatory classifications to
financial assets before reporting them to supervisory authorities.
Application
Classification Assignment Standard governs the assignment process by
ensuring that every classification decision is documented,
justified, governance-compliant, and supported by validated
classification methodology.
Result
Financial classifications remain consistent, auditable,
operationally reliable, and suitable for independent regulatory
verification.
