Canonical Definition

Value Context Documentation Module (VCDM) is the fifth Core Module of the Value Context Standard (VCXS).

VCDM governs the structured documentation of the value context established through the preceding modules of the Value Context Standard.

The Module creates a persistent, interpretable, and reconstructable record of:

what value is being governed → what value-bearing object it relates to → who or what may benefit from that value → within which reference framework the value is understood → under which contextual conditions that meaning applies.

VCDM does not determine whether value exists, where value originated, how much value exists, whether value is legally recognized, or whether a valuation is economically correct.

Its purpose is to ensure that the meaning of the governed value context does not become detached from the conditions under which that value was identified.

Architectural Position

VCDM is the fifth and final module within the Value Context Standard.

It follows:

VIM — Value Identification Module → VOM — Value Object Module → VBM — Value Beneficiary Module → VRFM — Value Reference Framework Module

and consolidates their governed outputs into:

Value Context Record

The internal sequence is therefore:

Value Identification → Value Object → Value Beneficiary → Value Reference Framework → Value Context Documentation

Once the Value Context Record has been established, the governed value may proceed to:

Value Origin Standard (VOS).

Operational Space

VCDM governs the documentation layer between:

established Value Context

and

subsequent value lifecycle governance.

It preserves the contextual foundation necessary for later VFM® processes to determine whether they are still governing the same value under the same relevant context.

The governed documentation may include:

governed value identification; value description; value type or form where defined; value-bearing object relationship; object context; beneficiary relationship; beneficiary context; reference framework; purpose of the value context; applicable conditions; relevant boundaries; contextual assumptions; contextual dependencies; temporal context; jurisdictional context where relevant; environmental or operational context; contextual exclusions; contextual changes; documentation provenance; version state; documentation status.

Value Context Record

The principal governance object produced by VCDM is the:

Value Context Record (VCR).

The Value Context Record provides the minimum structured reference through which the governed value can be recognized consistently throughout its subsequent lifecycle.

A Value Context Record should establish, where materially relevant:

Value → What value is being governed?

Value-Bearing Object → In relation to what object, capability, activity, relationship, resource, system, right, condition, or other value-bearing basis is the value being considered?

Beneficiary → For whom or for what may the value exist?

Reference Framework → Relative to which purpose, environment, condition, comparison, objective, or reference basis is the value understood?

Context Conditions → Under which conditions does this interpretation remain applicable?

The resulting record creates a governed answer to:

What exactly do we mean when we refer to this value?

Documentation Principle

Value cannot be governed consistently if its context changes silently.

A statement such as:

“This asset has value.”

is methodologically incomplete unless the relevant value context is understood.

The same object may possess:

financial value to an investor; operational value to an organization; strategic value to a government; scientific value to a research institution; utility value to a user; recovery value to a creditor; replacement value to an insurer; informational value to an AI system; mission value to a space organization; no relevant value to another beneficiary.

VCDM therefore preserves the context that gives the value statement its meaning.

Value Record ≠ Asset Record

VCDM does not create a universal record of the underlying asset, object, person, organization, system, or resource.

It creates a record of the governed value context associated with it.

Therefore:

Object Documentation ≠ Value Context Documentation

and:

Asset Identity ≠ Value Identity

Where identity governance is required, OBIDENITY® — Origin-Bound Identity Governance Architecture may provide the appropriate identity governance layer.

VFM® remains concerned with the value.

Context Persistence

Once value enters the wider lifecycle, its original context must remain reconstructable.

VCDM therefore preserves the relationship:

Value Lifecycle State → Value Context Record

A later observer should be able to determine:

which value was originally identified; which object it concerned; which beneficiary was relevant; which reference framework was applied; which contextual conditions existed; whether those conditions subsequently changed.

This prevents later lifecycle events from being interpreted against a context that never existed when the value was originally governed.

Context Versioning

Value context may change.

A beneficiary may change.

The relevant purpose may change.

The underlying object may change.

Operational conditions may change.

The reference framework may change.

The same physical or digital object may therefore participate in multiple legitimate value contexts.

VCDM should support explicit contextual versioning such as:

Value Context V1 → Material Context Change → Value Context V2

The previous context should not be silently overwritten where historical reconstruction remains materially important.

Context Change Record

Where a material contextual element changes, VCDM may create a:

Value Context Change Record

Material changes may include:

change of beneficiary; change of value-bearing object configuration; change of purpose; change of reference framework; change of relevant operational environment; change of material contextual assumptions; change of time horizon; change of applicable value relationship.

The existence of a contextual change does not automatically mean that the value itself has changed.

That distinction is fundamental:

Context Change ≠ Value Change

The Value Change Standard governs change in value itself.

VCDM records changes in the context through which that value is understood.

Multiple Value Contexts

One object may legitimately support multiple Value Context Records.

For example, a manufacturing robot may simultaneously possess:

Production Value for the manufacturing organization.

Resale Value for the asset owner.

Collateral Value for a financial institution.

Data Generation Value for an analytics operation.

Strategic Capability Value for the enterprise.

These should not automatically be collapsed into one undifferentiated concept of “value.”

VCDM allows each materially distinct value context to remain separately documented.

Temporal Context

Value context may be time-dependent.

A Value Context Record may therefore specify:

effective date; observation period; expected duration; relevant lifecycle phase; reference period; review condition; expiration condition where applicable.

A context established for one period must not automatically be assumed to remain unchanged indefinitely.

Context Documentation Status

VCDM may assign a documentation status such as:

Draft — context documentation is incomplete.

Established — the required contextual elements have been sufficiently documented.

Conditionally Established — the context is usable subject to explicit conditions.

Under Review — a material contextual change requires reassessment.

Superseded — a newer Value Context Record governs the current context.

Archived — the record is retained for historical reconstruction but is no longer operationally active.

These states concern the documentation record.

They do not determine whether value exists.

Minimum Implementation Framework

A minimum VCDM implementation should establish:

1. Value Reference

Record the governed value identified through the Value Identification Module.

2. Value-Bearing Object Reference

Record the relationship between the governed value and its relevant value-bearing object.

3. Beneficiary Reference

Record the beneficiary or beneficiary class relevant to the value context.

4. Reference Framework

Record the framework, purpose, objective, environment, comparison basis, or other reference condition through which the value is understood.

5. Context Conditions

Record materially relevant conditions, dependencies, assumptions, boundaries, and exclusions.

6. Temporal Context

Establish the time or lifecycle conditions relevant to the context where necessary.

7. Context Version

Assign an identifiable version or equivalent state where contextual evolution must be traceable.

8. Documentation Status

Establish whether the Value Context Record is draft, established, conditional, under review, superseded, or archived.

9. Change Traceability

Preserve material changes to the governed context.

10. Value Context Record

Consolidate the governed information into a reusable Value Context Record capable of accompanying the value into subsequent VFM® lifecycle governance.

Governance Outputs

VCDM may produce:

Value Context Record Value Context Identifier Value Context Summary Value-Bearing Object Reference Value Beneficiary Reference Value Reference Framework Record Value Context Condition Record Value Context Assumption Record Value Context Exclusion Record Value Context Version Record Value Context Change Record Value Context Documentation Status

Historical Value Context Record

These outputs provide the contextual foundation for subsequent governance under the Value Origin Standard and the wider VFM® lifecycle.

Enterprise Application

VCDM enables organizations to solve a deceptively important problem:

the word “value” is frequently used without preserving what that value actually means in context.

Without a governed Value Context Record, different departments, systems, institutions, algorithms, auditors, financial models, or decision-makers may use the same word while referring to fundamentally different value relationships.

VCDM creates a common contextual reference.

This can support:

banking and financial systems; asset management; insurance; enterprise accounting environments; public finance; infrastructure; manufacturing; supply chains; digital assets; AI systems; autonomous systems; energy systems; scientific programs; space missions; intellectual property; resource allocation; cost-reduction programs; future value-governance environments.

Use Case 1 — Banking: One Asset, Different

Value Contexts

A bank evaluates an industrial property connected to several financial relationships.

The property may simultaneously have:

market value for a potential sale,

collateral value for secured lending,

recovery value under a default scenario,

and

operational value for the company using the property.

If these contexts are not explicitly separated, systems may appear to discuss the same “asset value” while actually using different beneficiaries, purposes, conditions, time horizons, and reference frameworks.

VCDM establishes separate Value Context Records.

For example:

Property X → Collateral Value → Bank → Lending Reference Framework

and:

Property X → Operational Value → Manufacturing Company → Production Continuity Reference Framework

The underlying object may be identical.

The governed value context is not.

This gives later VFM® processes a stable basis for determining what happens to each form of value independently as conditions change.

Use Case 2 — Space Mission: Value as Avoided

Mission Cost

A space organization evaluates a simulation capability that can reduce the need for expensive physical testing.

The relevant value is not necessarily the purchase price of the simulation infrastructure.

A materially important value context may be:

avoided physical-test cost and avoided mission-development expenditure.

VCDM may establish:

Simulation Capability → Cost-Avoidance Value → Mission Program → Mission Development Cost Reference Framework → Defined Mission Phase and Test Conditions

Suppose the simulation capability allows the organization to identify a design failure before construction of a physical prototype.

The prevented expenditure may represent substantial value to the mission program.

VCDM does not calculate whether the claimed savings are correct.

It establishes which value is being governed and under which context the claimed value has meaning.

That governed context can then enter subsequent VFM® stages to determine:

where that value originated → whether it actually emerged → what state it entered → how it subsequently developed, changed, degraded, disappeared, or was restored.

Foundational Principles

Value without context is methodologically ambiguous.

The same object may carry multiple distinct forms of value simultaneously.

The same value-bearing object does not imply the same value.

Value for one beneficiary does not automatically constitute equivalent value for another beneficiary.

Context change is not automatically value change.

Historical value context should remain reconstructable when materially relevant.

A Value Context Record must preserve the relationship between the governed value, its value-bearing object, its beneficiary, its reference framework, and the conditions under which that value is understood.

Canonical Closing Statement

Value Context Documentation Module establishes the persistent contextual record through which governed value remains identifiable, interpretable, distinguishable, and reconstructable throughout the VFM® value lifecycle. By documenting the governed value, value-bearing object, beneficiary, reference framework, contextual conditions, assumptions, exclusions, temporal context, versions, and material contextual changes, VCDM prevents value from becoming detached from the conditions that give it meaning. The Module enables multiple forms of value associated with the same object to remain methodologically distinct, preserves historical context as value moves through subsequent lifecycle states and transitions, and provides the structured Value Context Record required for downstream Value Origin governance. Before VFM® can determine where value originates, emerges, changes, develops, degrades, reaches zero, is restored, or becomes extinct, the architecture must preserve exactly which value it is governing.
