Canonical Definition
Technology Use Boundary Module defines the structural conditionsunder which a methodology, system, device, hardware structure, AI
environment, autonomous process, or future technology remains within
ethically valid boundaries of use.
A system satisfies TUM only if:
- capability remains bounded by ethical legitimacy
- technically possible action is not automatically treated as valid action
- prohibited or invalid use pathways are structurally identifiable
- system design does not normalize boundary violation through convenience, scale, or power
- ethical validity is denied where capability exceeds legitimate use boundaries
A system that treats capability as sufficient justification does not
satisfy TUM.
Module Function
TUM defines the ethical boundary between what a system can do andwhat it may validly do.
It ensures that no methodology, system, or technology may pass ethical
layer conditions if its design, release logic, or operational use
extends beyond ethically governed boundaries.
The module applies wherever technical capability creates the possibility
of misuse, overreach, coercion, or illegitimate extension of operational
power.
Minimum Implementation Framework (MIF)
Step 6 — Restrict Invalid Deployment
The system must not be treated as ethically valid if its capabilitycan predictably exceed legitimate use boundaries without
structural restriction.
Minimum requirement:
- invalid use conditions block ethical passage
- unbounded capability does not qualify as valid deployment
- performance alone does not restore legitimacy
Use Case 1 — Autonomous Surveillance or Monitoring System
Use Case 2 — Advanced AI or Hardware Capability Expansion
Canonical Closing Statement
If capability exceeds ethically valid use boundaries, ethicalvalidity has not been achieved.
