C. Purpose

The purpose of Carbon Visibility Index™ is to:

  • establish measurable carbon-per-product visibility
  • enable transparent comparison between products
  • support lifecycle carbon accountability
  • provide a structural foundation for future carbon-per-product reporting systems
CVI™ transforms lifecycle carbon transparency into quantifiable product-level information.

D. Measurement Principle

The Carbon Visibility Index is expressed as:

Total lifecycle carbon exposure per defined product unit

Examples of functional units may include:
  • kg CO₂e per product
  • kg CO₂e per kilogram of product
  • kg CO₂e per liter of product
  • kg CO₂e per defined service unit
The declared functional unit must remain consistent to maintain comparability.

E. Structural Requirements

A Carbon Visibility Index declaration is structurally valid only when:
  • lifecycle boundaries are clearly defined
  • material origin and processing stages are documented
  • production energy sources are declared
  • packaging systems are disclosed
  • transport modes and distribution pathways are identified
  • the carbon calculation methodology is transparently stated
  • a responsible entity accepts accountability for the declared carbon index
Incomplete lifecycle definition weakens index comparability.

G. Strategic Role

Carbon Visibility Index™ functions as:
  • a product-level carbon measurement unit
  • a comparability instrument for supply chain optimization
  • a structural bridge between carbon transparency and economic evaluation
  • a foundation for potential future product-level carbon reporting systems
CVI™ transforms lifecycle transparency into measurable product-level carbon information.

H. Long-Term Role

Carbon Visibility Index™ establishes the canonical measurement architecture required for:
  • carbon-per-product disclosure
  • transparent product comparison
  • lifecycle carbon accountability
  • future carbon pricing readiness
It defines the structural unit of carbon measurement without imposing regulatory mandate.
