What Is Behavioral Escalation?
Behavioral Escalation is the governance capability that enables AI systems torecognize when autonomous behavior is no longer appropriate and when
responsibility must transition to higher governance authority.
Behavioral escalation determines:
- when AI should stop autonomous execution,
- when human intervention becomes necessary,
- when operational risk exceeds approved thresholds,
- when authority must be transferred,
- when governance policies require escalation,
- when AI must request assistance rather than continue independently.
Trustworthy AI is defined not only by what it can do.
